This course meets the new Cultural Diversity mandate for Continuing Professional Development of Psychologists. This is a repeat requirement by the Board of Psychologists. It must be fulfilled in each licensing renewal.
We each contain a rich blend of cultural realities. Assumptions based on our own family histories can get in the way of genuine understanding. Staying open to the unique experiences of others requires entering a process of ongoing discovery. In addition to improving effectiveness, this compassionate dialog and self-examination can increase self-acceptance.
Depth psychology has a long history of diversity research. Archetypal theory is uniquely useful in cross-cultural applications. The course uses comparative mythology and imaginal interventions to help bridge differences.
The seminar explores the practice of flexibility when encountering dissimilar frameworks of meaning. Reflecting on counter-transference gives us access to hidden dynamics. This content is designed for psychologists, LMFTs, LCSWs and other clinicians. It would also be useful for people in additional helping professions ~ and those interested in Cross-Cultural studies.
Explain unique contributions of depth psychology to cross-cultural studies.
Examine what professionals represent to various cultural groups.
Elucidate behaviors that show sensitivity to culturally different clients.
Describe the stages of increasing cultural humility.
Recognize psychodynamic aspects of working with diverse populations.
Identify ways clinical effectiveness benefits from culturally responsive practices.
The material is presented at an introductory level for psychologists, requiring no background in mythic studies, narrative theory, or Jungian psychology. No advance preparation is necessary. However, participants are provided with a recommended reading list as part of their class materials.
